History & Location:
The townsland of Seskin has been in the O'Donnell family since the early 1700's. The present house was built circa 1850. It is situated in the Golden Vale of Ivowen between Slievenamon and the river Suir, with the Comeragh mountains beyond to the south. It is called the Golden Vale because of the fertility of the land between the two mountain ridges. The finest view of the whole area can be had from the summit of Slievenamon over the historical village and ruins of Kilcash. There is a small fairy level plateau at the summit where there is a collection of stones brought by those who have climbed the mountain. On a clear day one can view vast areas of South Tipperary, Cashel (and it's St. Patrick's Rock), South Kilkenny and the Waterford Copper Coast. The Golden Vale refers not merely to the richness of the soil, the beauty of it's scenery and it's abundance of fish and game, but also includes a wealth of music, literature and legend. Many castles, fortifications and earlier earthen forts are to be found in the area, including Ardfinnan, Cahir, Clonmel, Lisronagh, Fethard, Kiltinan, Kilcash and Carrick on Suir. |
